Biography

Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka is Uganda's first wildlife veterinary officer. She trained at the Royal Veterinary College in London and in 1996 joined the Uganda Wildlife Authority, where her veterinary work and research helped protect critically endangered mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. In 2003 she co-founded Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH), applying a One Health approach to conservation. She was named a UNEP Champion of the Earth for Science and Innovation in 2021, and is the author of the memoir Walking with Gorillas: The Journey of an African Wildlife Vet (2023), with a foreword by Jane Goodall.
